A Jewish Calendar from The Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary
September 2009ûDecember 2010 / Elul 5769ûTevet 5771
The biblical book of Esther, the basis for the annual celebration of Purim, is by tradition recited from a handwritten parchment scroll. Although authorities frowned on the decoration of Torah scrolls, the story of Esther could be artistically embellished because the text does not contain the divine name. This sixteen-month calendar presents thirteen beautifully ornamented, richly colorful Esther scrolls from Israel, Italy, Morocco, Germany, Austria, and Turkey, dating from the seventeenth to the twentieth century (the calendarÆs last four monthÆs grids are grouped on one page). Also included are Jewish holidays, days of the Jewish year, weekly Torah readings, and candlelighting times for selected cities.
