Chanukah Menorah: What’s the Deal?
A Chanukah menorah is the iconic symbol of the Jewish holiday of Chanukah, or Hanukkah in transliterated English. The eight day festival celebrates the victories of the monotheistic Maccabees over their polytheistic Greek oppressors. The ongoing battles left the Jewish Temple in disarray, requiring significant restoration efforts to restore the House of God to its former glory.
The lack of oil to kindle the menorah in the Temple was of particular concern to the Jews. The time necessary to obtain new oil was eight days. With no choice, they used the small amount they had which was sufficient for one day’s lighting. A miracle occurred and the lamps remained burning until eight days had passed and new oil arrived. As a remembrance, Jews mark the festival by lighting lamps each night.
